PICTURE CAPTION: Kiran Sethi - Lady Singham


Kiran Sethi was born on 11th September 1967 in New Delhi. As a student Salwan Senior Secondary school she started training in Judo under Mr. Shiv Kumar Kohli since 1985 and took part in various Judo competitions. In 1987 she joined Delhi Police as a constable and is currently officiating as a sub inspector. During her tenure she started providing self-defence training to the women in the force.

Alongside Mr. Shiv Kumar Kohli she trained 1800 children in a self defence camp held by the central district of Delhi Police in 1989. Thereafter regular self defence training classes started taking place. People from every strata of society and from all over Delhi joined in. Another feather in her cap was when the Delhi Police joined hands with Neighbourhood Watch Scheme to setup a camp for her to train women in self-defence.

She also trained male members of the Delhi Police Training Centre, New Police Line. She was the only woman to do so. She also choreographed an aerobics routine for school students to perform on 26th January at Rajpath. She has also trained physically and mentally challenged kids to enable them to deal with their problems. She did not limit her training sessions to camps only, rather expanded to the children belonging to lower income group who are more vulnerable to the arising crime rate in the society.

She has trained innumerable girls of various schools, colleges and institutes on behalf of Delhi Police to make the strong and confident. She has had the honour of training in the camps organized by Delhi Legal Service Authority. Another major contribution made by Kiran Sethi is rehabilitating the drug abused by training in yoga to motivate and support them to get back to normal life. She has also motivated end number of unemployed youngsters by attaching to YUVA project by Delhi Police.

To provide social awareness amongst the school children she counsels and addresses to their problems under the banner of Nirbhik Scheme implemented by Delhi Police. She also trains the Delhi Police staff and senior citizen in yoga, aerobics and self defence for physical fitness. To add to her credits, she has trained women and children of the families of Delhi Police officials and CBI officials for which she was honoured by the Lt. Governor’s wife.

Further for her selfless service to women and children she was awarded DCW Achievement award by the Delhi Commission for Women. She has been invited by various state governments for self defence demonstration and has been honored by UT Administrator, Mr. V.P. Singh Badnore (Chandigarh) and M.P., Ms. KirronKher.  She has earned a mention in the Limca Book of Records for preparing a self defense demonstration with more than 5000 girls in front of Honorable Home minister.

Giving a practical demo of self defense, Kiran Sethi rescued a blind girl, which was extensively covered by national and international print and electronic media giving her the title of Lady Singham. She displayed lot of courage by training Muslim girls in the month of Ramadan while they were fasting. She has been bestowed with the Asadharan Puraskar by Delhi Police. The superwoman Kiran Sethi is a true example of Women Empowerment as she responsibly and diligently fulfills her duty as a self defense and yoga trainer as well as a Delhi Police official.
